Is FUT right for your hair loss?

FUT may suit patients with a diagnosed pattern of hair loss, an adequate donor area and goals that can be met through planned strip harvesting.

FUT may suit patients with longer hairstyles who do not want to shave the full donor area, and patients with tightly curled hair, such as Afro-Caribbean hair.

The best technique depends on your diagnosis, donor supply, likely future loss, scalp laxity and preferred hairstyle. Dr Jamie will assess these factors before recommending a plan.

Book an FUT consultation
  • Your hair loss

Confirm the cause, pattern and likely progression of loss. Consider whether investigation, medical treatment or observation should come first.

  • Your donor supply

Assess density, scalp laxity and the proposed strip position. Plan conservatively to protect hair for current and possible future needs.

  • Your linear scar

Discuss the donor closure and whether your preferred hair length can cover the linear scar left after FUT.

What happens during FUT surgery?

FUT, or follicular unit transplantation, removes a narrow strip of hair-bearing scalp. Follicular units are dissected from it and placed into recipient sites created to follow the agreed design.

Local anaesthetic being administered before a hair transplant procedure
  1. Step 1

    Agree the design

Dr Jamie will work with you to design a hairline shape that suits your face shape and desired aesthetic goals.

  2. Step 2

    Prepare the donor area

The small donor strip is trimmed, cleaned and then numbed using local anaesthetic injections, before a 1 cm linear strip of skin containing hair follicles is cut and removed. The skin is then closed together again with sutures.

  3. Step 3

    Prepare individual grafts

A team of specially trained surgical assistants will dissect the removed section of skin into individual hair follicles and prepare them for implanting.

    Usually takes around 2 hours.

  4. Step 4

    Prepare recipient sites

Dr Jamie will then create incisions in the recipient site to follow the planned angle, direction and distribution of your natural hair.

    Usually takes around 1 hour.

  5. Step 5

    Place grafts and plan care

Your carefully prepared grafts are then placed into the recipient sites by our highly trained hair technicians.

    Usually takes 2–3 hours.

Before you leave, Dr Jamie will explain the aftercare advice and provide you with our specially curated bag containing everything you need for the initial two weeks to look after your new hair follicles.

How FUT differs from FUE

Both techniques move your own donor hair to areas of thinning or loss. The main difference is how follicles are removed. Dr Jamie recommends an approach based on your donor supply, hairstyle, previous treatment and long-term plan.

FUE

Follicular unit excision

FUE, often described as extraction, uses a small punch to remove follicular units individually before placement.

More about FUE
Donor hair
Removed individually across the planned donor zone.
Shaving
The donor area is usually shaved for clear access.
Scarring
Multiple small round scars remain across the area.
FUT

Follicular unit transplantation

A narrow strip of hair-bearing scalp is removed, then divided into follicular-unit grafts for placement.

More about FUT
Donor hair
Removed within a narrow strip, then divided.
Shaving
A full donor-area shave may not be needed.
Scarring
One linear scar remains after the donor area heals.

Your FUT treatment with Dr Jamie Harrison

Dr Jamie personally assesses your suitability, plans the donor and recipient areas, agrees the hairline and performs the surgical stages of your treatment.

He remains involved through aftercare as the donor closure heals and transplanted hair moves through its early shedding and growth stages.

His approach balances natural-looking coverage with long-term donor preservation, giving you a plan designed around both your current goals and future hair-loss pattern.

FUT recovery and results timeline

The early days are about protecting the grafts and allowing the donor closure to heal. Recovery and growth vary, so your own aftercare instructions and review plan take priority over general timelines.

Visible early recovery
Often around 1–2 weeks
Donor healing
One linear donor closure
Early growth
Often from months 3–4
Ongoing maturation
May continue up to 18 months

Protect both areas

Follow your personalised washing, sleeping and activity guidance while the grafts and linear donor closure begin to settle and heal.

How much does a FUT hair transplant cost?

FUT is quoted individually because the price depends on the treatment area, available donor supply and complexity of the agreed surgical plan.
