Is FUE right for your hair loss?

FUE may suit patients with a diagnosed pattern of hair loss, an adequate donor area and goals that can be met within a finite donor supply.

FUE requires the back and sides of your head to be shaved to a zero, making it suitable for patients with shorter hairstyles.

The best technique depends on your diagnosis, donor supply, likely future loss, scalp health and preferred hairstyle. Dr Jamie compares these factors before recommending a plan.

Book an FUE consultation
  • Your hair loss

Confirm the cause, pattern and likely progression of loss. Consider whether investigation, medical treatment or observation should come first.

  • Your donor supply

Assess density, hair calibre and the proposed donor zone. Plan conservatively to protect hair for current and possible future needs.

  • Your scar pattern

Discuss the small round scars left by FUE and whether your preferred hair length suits the proposed extraction plan.

What happens during FUE surgery?

FUE, or follicular unit excision, uses a small punch to remove follicular units individually. The grafts are prepared and placed into recipient sites created to follow the agreed design.

  1. Step 1

    Agree the design

Dr Jamie works with you to design a hairline that suits your face shape. Together, you agree the treatment area, expected coverage and donor plan before surgical preparation begins.

  2. Step 2

    Prepare the donor area

The donor area is trimmed and cleaned in preparation for graft removal. Local anaesthetic injections then numb the area before Dr Jamie begins extracting the selected follicular units.

  3. Step 3

    Remove individual grafts

Dr Jamie uses a punch to make small circular incisions around selected follicular units. The grafts are removed, checked, counted and prepared for implantation. This usually takes 2–3 hours.

  4. Step 4

    Prepare recipient sites

Dr Jamie creates small incisions in the recipient area, following the agreed hairline design and the planned angle, direction and distribution of your natural hair. This takes around 1 hour.

  5. Step 5

    Place the prepared grafts

Our highly trained hair technicians place the prepared grafts into the recipient sites created by Dr Jamie. This follows the agreed treatment plan and usually takes a further 2–3 hours.

Dr Jamie will explain your aftercare and provide a specially curated bag containing everything you need to look after your new hair follicles during the first two weeks.

How FUE differs from FUT

Both techniques move your own donor hair to areas of thinning or loss. The main difference is how follicles are removed. Dr Jamie recommends an approach based on your donor supply, hairstyle, previous treatment and long-term plan.

FUE

Follicular unit excision

FUE, often described as extraction, uses a small punch to remove follicular units individually before placement.

More about FUE

Removed individually across the planned donor zone.
Shaving
The donor area is usually shaved for clear access.
Scarring
Multiple small round scars remain across the area.
FUT

Follicular unit transplantation

A narrow strip of hair-bearing scalp is removed, then divided into follicular-unit grafts for placement.

More about FUT
Donor hair
Removed within a narrow strip, then divided.
Shaving
A full donor-area shave may not be needed.
Scarring
One linear scar remains after the donor area heals.
